I am very pleased to announce that AFAC has been selected to receive the 11th Annual James B. Hunter Human Rights Award given by the Arlington Human Rights Commission. The Hunter Award is given in recognition of sustained commitment and outstanding achievement in the area of human rights made in Arlington by an individual, community group, non-profit organization or business.

We were nominated for this award by a member of the Clarendon Presbyterian Church who regularly volunteers at AFAC. Here is part of what he wrote: To simply feed the hungry, no matter who they are, no matter their race, nationality, religion or any other defining characteristic – other than that they are hungry and known to be in need – is a very basic cornerstone of ensuring and protecting human rights. The most essential human rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness are unattainable if one is unfed and uncared for.

Volunteer Opportunities

Soup goes here…Cereal goes there… We need help sorting food coming in from the holiday food drives. We’d like several volunteers on Monday or Tuesday afternoons and several more any weekday morning during the month of December. Please contact us at volunteer4afac@aol.com to sign up.

Other Ways to Help AFAC

Giving to AFAC: There are a number of ways to give to AFAC, some with significant tax advantages, between now and the end of the year. There may be tax advantages for donors age 70.5 and older for giving from their IRA in 2009. Those provisions are set to expire in 2009, so check with your tax advisor about how to give. And while your stocks may have depreciated in value this year, booking your losses now may be used to offset gains later. Please be sure to consult with your tax advisor about these opportunities.

Virtual Food Drive: Check out the new feature on our website – Virtual Food Drive. This is a convenient and easy way to donate to AFAC. Let your friends and family know about this option when you are hosting a food drive.

Thank you

Thank you to Lynn Myers, Marlene Ellis, Becky Ramsey, Getnesh Amde, Justin Dubbs, Gary Gortenberg, Anne Purcell, Carole Assante, Tyler Corson, Susie & Cameron Little, and Lara Noelle for helping at Light Up the Village in Shirlington. AFAC collected over 100 pounds of food and $140 from the many families who enjoyed the horse and carriage rides and other events of the evening.

Thanks for all you do for AFAC. We need and appreciate your support.
