AFAC Info – May 13, 2010

Hello Everyone.

The 2010 Feinstein Challenge was again a resounding success. In the 5 plus years AFAC has participated in the Feinstein Challenge, gifts have grown enormously. This year donations have grown to well over $111,000 from 534 donors. While many of last year’s donors once again made generous contributions, we received over $14,000 from 91 first-time donors. On behalf of everyone here at AFAC, I want to thank all of our donors for their great generosity.

Our thanks to Arlington’s Letter Carriers for participating in the Stamp Out Hunger food drive on May 8th. AFAC received over 19,000 pounds of food from this one day event. Thanks also to all the volunteers who helped make the Letter Carriers Food Drive a success – from leafleting neighborhoods and putting up posters, to picking up donations at the post office and bringing them to AFAC, to helping us sort through the 19,263 pounds of donations. We are truly grateful.

Volunteer Opportunities

Leave Food at Your Mailbox on Saturday
This Saturday, May 8th, is the annual Letter Carriers Food Drive. You can help Stamp Out Hunger in Arlington by leaving a bag of non-perishable, non-breakable food donations at your mailbox for your letter carrier. Spread the word to your friends, neighbors and co-workers. Tweet, facebook, or post a flyer. Last year AFAC collected 21,000 pounds of food in this one-day food drive.

We’re also looking for strong volunteers to help unload and sort the food on Saturday from 3:30-7pm. If you have a truck, SUV or minivan and can help pick-up food from the post offices, we need your help as well. Email laura.jackson@afac.org if you can volunteer.

Help AFAC behind the scenes in the warehouse.
Saturday, May 15th from 12:30-2:30pm, we need help in the warehouse. Adults and children 12 years and older are welcome. Please contact volunteer4afac@afac.org to sign up for a spot. Other weekend opportunities are also available.

Seeking volunteers for a weekly grocery distribution.
In June, AFAC will begin distributing groceries at a retirement community in south Arlington. We need volunteers to help Monday mornings from 10:30-12:30. Please contact the volunteer department at volunteer4afac@afac.org for information.

AFAC Info – May 6, 2010

Hello Everyone.

Kids Matter. Do you know that this weekend is the Letter Carriers Food Drive? We’ve been mentioning it in our e-newsletter for several weeks now. Perhaps you heard about it again because someone left a flyer at your house about it. Last year, we had an increase in the amount of food that we received from the LCFD. And that increase was due to the leafleting that we did in Arlington neighborhoods. This past weekend I received a flyer at my house. It was delivered by an AFAC volunteer and her son. What a great opportunity this is to show how young people and families can help AFAC. It also reminded me of some recent research which showed that teenagers were more likely to give to a charity or volunteer if their parents talked to them about how their efforts can help others. I encourage all parents to do just this. Help your child understand that ‘Kids Matter’ by talking to them about giving and volunteering together!

AFAC – Info, April 22, 2010

Hello Everyone.

Recently I attended a networking lunch at an Arlington restaurant. Each of us was given a little time to introduce ourselves and talk about our business. After lunch was over, one of the waitresses came up to me and thanked me for our work here at AFAC. She told me that she had been a client of ours, but now that she had a job and her finances were in better order, she no longer needed our help. It’s not hard to imagine a situation where someone could be out of work and need assistance from AFAC. Thankfully, because of your support, we are able to help folks like that waitress get over a short term crisis. Thank you for all your support of AFAC. Rest assured you are helping real people who truly need help.

AFAC Info – April 16, 2010

Hello Everyone.

While we have made many qualitative changes to our menu over time, especially in ways like adding more whole foods like rice and oatmeal, next week marks the first true expansion in our food program in a very long time. We have long wanted to give more food to large families (those families with 4 or more members), and we will do this now by doubling the amount of chicken we give them. This excellent protein source is most needed and wanted by the families who turn to us for assistance. You can support this new, extra effort by clicking the link to our virtual food drive and selecting chicken. Each week we distribute groceries to about 500 large families — these are the clients with children. We’ll need to purchase an extra 2,000 pounds of chicken each month. Please support this extra effort to help Arlington families with children in need. http://www.afac.org/afac_virtual_fooddrive.html.

Volunteer Opportunities

Front desk help needed We are looking for a volunteer to help answer phones Tuesday afternoons from 2:30-5:00pm. Please contact volunteer4afac@afac.org if you are able to help.

Farmers’ Market pick-up drivers and produce helpers needed
Each summer, AFAC volunteers go to Arlington farmers’ markets to pick up market-end produce donations. This coming season we need volunteers to help mid-day Saturdays and Sundays and early evening on Tuesdays beginning in mid-June. Teams are forming now. Contact Puwen at Puwen.Lee@afac.org for information on how you can help.

Russian-speaker?
In June, AFAC will begin distributing groceries at an off-site location which houses many Russian speakers. We need two Russian speakers to help with this distribution on Monday mornings. Please contact the volunteer department at volunteer4afac@afac.org if you can help.

Family Bagging Night Change
If your family would like to volunteer, we ask that you email the volunteer department at volunteer4afac@afac.org to reserve a space for Monday, May 10th. We will be able to accommodate six (6) families (ideal for families with children between the ages of 5 and 10).

Can you grow some vegetable seedlings for AFAC?
Seedlings will be distributed in late April/early May to our clients and gardeners who pledge to “Plant A Row” of vegetables for AFAC. Tomato, pepper and eggplant seedlings are especially welcome (but if you will be dividing herbs or a strawberry bed and can bring repotted plants, those would help too). Free seeds are available now to gardeners pledging to grow vegetables for AFAC. Contact Puwen at puwen.lee@afac.org for more information.

Thank you

Many thanks to Front Page Arlington for hosting a fundraiser for AFAC on Sunday, March 28th. Attendees donated non-perishable foods in addition to bidding and winning autographed jersey’s, hockey sticks, pucks, and shirts, and were able to meet and mingle with many of our Washington Capitals players. We appreciate their support of AFAC.
