If the allotment is $4.03/day per person and you have 5 people, you could have spent up to $60.45 ($12.09 for 3 days * 5 people).

When I was a teenager in the early 60's I told my mother that she spent too much on food. I told her that I could feed our family of three on $10per week. She told me that for every week I could do it she would give me $5. I was able to do it for three weeks, but then my parents got tied of eating spaghetti and hot dogs. The secret is buying store brands, produce that is in season at Magruders (the cheapest produce around), and NO junk food. Right now our local grocery store has their brand Cheerios for $1.97 for a box of at least 12 servings. On Mondays Magruders has bananas 2 pounds for $1 and a gallon of milk for .about$3 . I could give lessons on how to save money on food.

So, I started the Hunger Challenge on Saturday and I'm not going to lie. I should have planned better, because I'm pretty hungry.
I guess I didn't realize how much I graze through the day, because now I can't if I'm only going to spend $4.03/day.
And, I didn't want to not eat what I already have in my fridge, so calculating that has been interesting.
I also realized today that I didn't have any vegetables yesterday, unless you count the salsa I had with my tortilla chips. And no fruit, unless you count that scoop of Passion Fruit gelato.
So far, Saturday: $3.81; Sunday: $4.05 (oops- 2 cents over); Monday: $3.90.
I feel like I should be able to go get some veggies or fruit today to give me more energy for the rest of the week. So far, I've had no breakfast today and I have rice & beans for lunch and am planning on PB & J for dinner unless something else more exciting comes along! Anyone have suggestions?

I don't live in the area, but I just want to say thank you for what you all are doing! I hope that you find the volunteers you need. What are the "Plot Against Hunger" garden tours? They sound really cool!
