Be prepared for the Boy Scout Food Drive: Saturday, November 13th
Each year, Arlington Scout troops visit Arlington neighborhoods, requesting food donations for AFAC. Be prepared and put together your bag of donations now! Needed items are: cereal (low-sugar), canned proteins (tuna, salmon, chicken), and canned soups (low-sodium). Last year, Scouts collected 43,000 pounds of food for AFAC. Let’s do our best to break that record! To volunteer to make Boy Scout Food Drive posters for your neighborhood, contact volunteer4afac@afac.org.

Bluegrass and folk music will be on the program for a concert to benefit AFAC at 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 20, at the Barcroft Community House, 800 S. Buchanan Street, in Arlington.
Headlining the program will be Hollertown, a D.C.-based band that plays bluegrass, folk and American roots music. Opening the show will be Kathy Kerr and Friends, with old-time fiddle music; followed by members of the Josh Drews, a D.C.-based folk-rock band. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under. Doors open at 6:30. Desserts and liquid refreshments will be available for purchase. Concert patrons are also encouraged to bring a canned good or box of cereal, which will be donated to AFAC along with proceeds from ticket sales. For more information about the concert, call Alicia or Phil Cackley at 703-271-9743.

The 5th Annual Arlington Turkey Trot: Thanksgiving Day-Thursday, November 25th, 8am

Your vote counts! AFAC Info: October 29th, 2010

Vote for AFAC for an ABBIE!

AFAC won the 2009 ABBIE award for Arlington’s Best Community-Based Nonprofit. Let’s do it again. You can vote until November 8th by clicking here. ABBIE winners receive a year’s worth of free publicity.

Please help us welcome Kerry Lyon, who joins our driving staff now that Steve O’Leary has moved to Texas. Kerry has been volunteering at AFAC on our weekend produce bagging teams and as a supervisor for one of the evening bagging sessions. Kerry drove a landscaping truck with a trailer around Houston when he lived there, so he’s used to driving in crazy traffic!

Thank You
The gleaning season is coming to an end at AFAC. We would like to thank AFAC volunteer Susan Callegari, who coordinated hundreds of gleaners to harvest crops on behalf of AFAC this summer. We also thank Pastor Daniel Hall of the Mid-Atlantic Gleaning Network and Miller Farms in Clinton, MD for their donations of produce for our clients.

Thank you to the many people who participated in CROP Walk 2010. On a beautiful fall morning, almost 200 people walked to raise funds and awareness for hunger relief internationally and locally. We have more photos on our website.

Thanks also to Mary Klapmust for organizing and Jon Fraller for supervising the AFAC Young Professionals tour and bagging this week. The group bagged rice and groceries for distribution to AFAC clients. To learn more about the next Young Professionals’ activity, email young.professionals@afac.org.

Free Bread and Bagels!
Many organizations prepare bagged lunches for the homeless in Arlington and also for workers at the Shirlington Employment and Education Center each week. AFAC supports these efforts by providing bread for the sandwiches included in these meals. If your organization, school, or congregation currently purchases bread for these bagged lunches, please contact Bruk.Gudissa@afac.org, AFAC’s warehouse manager, to obtain free loaves of bread.
