AFAC Info, May 20, 2010

Hello Everyone,
Several high school students are hard at work planning the second annual Race for AFAC. In conjunction with that event, they have organized a fundraising event at Joe’s Pizza. It’s great pizza and a great cause. Also, please note that this is the last week to submit your nomination for the “Volunteer of the Year” awards to be presented at the Volunteer Appreciation Picnic in June.

Eat at Joe’s Pizza on May 20th
Joe’s Pizza on Lee Highway in Arlington is supporting the 5k for Arlington Food Assistance Center by donating 10% of their night’s proceeds on May 20th. Dine in or carry out from 5-9pm and mention “AFAC” or “5k Run” and 10% of your bill will be donated to the cause!

The second annual Race for AFAC is being held on Sunday, June 13th at the Lower Bluemont Junction Trail, 329 N. Manchester Street, Arlington, VA. The race begins at 9am. To register, click here. For more information, email Run4AFAC@aol.com.

AFAC Info – May 13, 2010

Hello Everyone.

The 2010 Feinstein Challenge was again a resounding success. In the 5 plus years AFAC has participated in the Feinstein Challenge, gifts have grown enormously. This year donations have grown to well over $111,000 from 534 donors. While many of last year’s donors once again made generous contributions, we received over $14,000 from 91 first-time donors. On behalf of everyone here at AFAC, I want to thank all of our donors for their great generosity.

Our thanks to Arlington’s Letter Carriers for participating in the Stamp Out Hunger food drive on May 8th. AFAC received over 19,000 pounds of food from this one day event. Thanks also to all the volunteers who helped make the Letter Carriers Food Drive a success – from leafleting neighborhoods and putting up posters, to picking up donations at the post office and bringing them to AFAC, to helping us sort through the 19,263 pounds of donations. We are truly grateful.

Volunteer Opportunities

Leave Food at Your Mailbox on Saturday
This Saturday, May 8th, is the annual Letter Carriers Food Drive. You can help Stamp Out Hunger in Arlington by leaving a bag of non-perishable, non-breakable food donations at your mailbox for your letter carrier. Spread the word to your friends, neighbors and co-workers. Tweet, facebook, or post a flyer. Last year AFAC collected 21,000 pounds of food in this one-day food drive.

We’re also looking for strong volunteers to help unload and sort the food on Saturday from 3:30-7pm. If you have a truck, SUV or minivan and can help pick-up food from the post offices, we need your help as well. Email laura.jackson@afac.org if you can volunteer.

Help AFAC behind the scenes in the warehouse.
Saturday, May 15th from 12:30-2:30pm, we need help in the warehouse. Adults and children 12 years and older are welcome. Please contact volunteer4afac@afac.org to sign up for a spot. Other weekend opportunities are also available.

Seeking volunteers for a weekly grocery distribution.
In June, AFAC will begin distributing groceries at a retirement community in south Arlington. We need volunteers to help Monday mornings from 10:30-12:30. Please contact the volunteer department at volunteer4afac@afac.org for information.

Hello Everyone.

Kids Matter. Do you know that this weekend is the Letter Carriers Food Drive? We’ve been mentioning it in our e-newsletter for several weeks now. Perhaps you heard about it again because someone left a flyer at your house about it. Last year, we had an increase in the amount of food that we received from the LCFD. And that increase was due to the leafleting that we did in Arlington neighborhoods. This past weekend I received a flyer at my house. It was delivered by an AFAC volunteer and her son. What a great opportunity this is to show how young people and families can help AFAC. It also reminded me of some recent research which showed that teenagers were more likely to give to a charity or volunteer if their parents talked to them about how their efforts can help others. I encourage all parents to do just this. Help your child understand that ‘Kids Matter’ by talking to them about giving and volunteering together!

Thank you to Michael Shea at Arlington Independent Media for collecting donations for AFAC at his show last week, Science Focus Elementary School for collecting food as part of their 5k, and Claremont Elementary School – World Wide Helpers for collecting food at their school concert. Thank you also to the group from Datatel who came to help in the warehouse and Lifetime Learning Institute of Norther Virginia for hosting their food drive.
