Volunteer Opportunities

Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service (January 18, 2010) – Please consider doing a food drive to benefit AFAC as part of our program of service for Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service. Last year, more than 80 food drives brought in over 8,000 pounds of food that day. Let’s beat last year’s record!

Family Bagging Night Change.
Because of the overwhelming response to Family Bagging Nights, we will need to limit the number of families who can come help on those evenings. If your family would like to volunteer, we ask that you email the volunteer department at volunteer4afac@aol.com to reserve a space. We will be able to accommodate six (6) families for those evenings. We have enough volunteers for January, but if you are interested in helping on February 6th, please RSVP. There are many other ways that families can help AFAC. Please check out our web site at http://www.afac.org to find out how.

Looking forward to Spring? We are too! Join AFAC’s Plot Against Hunger program grow fresh produce for our clients. Don’t know where to begin? Here are a few suggestions: plant an extra row in your garden; ask if your organization can act as a drop-off site for local gardeners in the summer; ask if your organization or school can start a Plot Against Hunger plot for AFAC. No space? How about gardening in containers? Here’s a link to a great article from Arlington-based Arbour Realty.

Coming next week!

A vote for ASPAN is a vote for AFAC! Our partner agency, ASPAN, has won the first round in the Chase Community Giving Challenge. They are now 1 of 100 agencies competing in the second round for a $1 million prize. The contest is being run on Facebook. We’ve agreed to help them win and will get a $50,000 sub-grant if they do. You can help AFAC by voting for ASPAN in the contest. You must have a Facebook page and become a fan of the Chase Challenge. (It’s so easy, even I did it!) The contest opens Friday, January 15 and closes January 22. Our website will have more details next week, and you can also check out the AFAC Causes page on Facebook for details next week.

Thank you

Thanks for all you do for AFAC. We need and appreciate your support.
