Distributing Food at AFAC last Saturday

Distributing Food at AFAC Last Saturday

By Lynn Newbill

I volunteered at AFAC last Saturday morning with Single Volunteers of DC, and helped serve more than 160 families. That’s more than double the number of families we were serving just 6 months ago on an average Saturday morning!

It was a good distribution day – we had fresh produce for the first time in months! It was lovely to be able to tell the clients they could select four (!!!) fresh produce items, and to have a wide variety of fruits and vegetables to choose from! We had apples, kiwi, grapes, a few boxes of strawberries and raspberries. There were lots and lots of green beans and sweet potatoes, as well as carrots, squash, yucca, and other vegetable items. That part was very exciting, both to the clients and to the volunteers!

We had a huge number of questionable bananas, starting to age gracefully. They wouldn’t last until Monday, so we were able to let people take as much as they wanted. You might think people would turn down bananas that are beginning to show brown spots, but that wasn’t the case. Those bananas flew off the “Gratis” (free to take) shelves! Lots of folks bake or cook with over-ripe bananas, using them as flavoring or as a meal stretcher. Others ate them on their way out the door. There were lots of banana peels in the dumpster that morning! For some AFAC clients this may have been their primary meal for the day.

We were also pleasantly surprised to find that we had enough boxed cereal to distribute one per family. I don’t recall the last time our Saturday distribution included boxed cereal. It just hasn’t been available. The good fortune of this Saturday clients meant that boxed cereal probably wouldn’t be available for weekday clients, because Saturday distribution distributed much of the available stock.

The shelves of “choice” or “miscellaneous” food items were reasonably well supplied when we started. These are items that don’t fall into a specific category distributed by AFAC, generally those little extras that fill bellies and meet cravings, such as box mixes, ramen noodles, rice, jello, spices, etc. Each family was able to select two “choice” items, of which one could be a bag of corn flour, a very desirable product! After about the first two hours, we realized we weren’t able to re-stock as the shelves emptied. The miscellaneous items were mostly gone.

The good news is that the AFAC warehouse is partially stocked with canned goods from the American Institute of Architects Canstruction event a few weeks back. Judging from the floor space taken up by the donation crates of those donated foods, AFAC probably has canned food stocks to carry through for perhaps 8 weeks of distributions, until the donations from the Postal Carrier’s Canned Goods Drive come in and are sorted during the second week of May.

For those of you reading this blog, next time you get to a grocery store, please consider purchasing a few items for AFAC – just about any food items you would use in your own cooking on a day-to-day basis is needed by AFAC clients!

Also, please remember AFAC on Saturday, May 9th, when the Postal Carriers have their canned food drive. If everyone would donate just a few cans each, AFAC could fill its warehouse and continue to support clients for many weeks to come!

Please give what you are able! Any and all food items you donate are appreciated and necessary.

AFAC Volunteer through Single Volunteers of DC and Zonta International

By Lynn Newbill
AFAC Volunteer through Single Volunteers of DC and Zonta International

My Zonta service club collects food items for AFAC at our monthly our meetings, but only a couple of our members have been to AFAC, or participated in an AFAC-sponsored event other than our monthly food collections.

I talk at most Zonta meetings about my experiences as an AFAC volunteer through Single Volunteers of DC. During these brief sessions, I try to describe to our club membership what our food donations mean to AFAC and its clients.

One of our members recently delivered some donations to the AFAC warehouse, and later emailed me to say “…I got a taste of what you do for AFAC. I got there and solicited help to bring groceries in. There was a line … the look of despair of those waiting was a difficult sight and hard to bear.”

There is despair among AFAC’s clients. Most struggle in this difficult economy, and may also face private challenges such as medical issues, absence of English language skills, and education barriers.

But within the AFAC community of clients, volunteers and staff, there’s also tremendous hope! I see this every time I volunteer at the AFAC Warehouse.

At the door, before AFAC opens for food distribution, there is cooperation, social interaction, and friendship with people who come at the same time every week. Clients have an informal numbering method so that they know who arrived first – they don’t cut in line, they don’t push and shove. Many of them greet employees and returning volunteers like we are old friends, and some of us know a little bit about each other.

The clients speak many languages, often not known by AFAC employees or volunteers. Sometimes our communications are as basic as gestures and facial expressions. But clients always help translate for one another if they know enough of both languages to assist! It’s always done with caring and respect, and everybody goes out of their way to have a successful interaction at whatever level we are able to reach.

People may be in NEED, but inside the warehouse, when they finish shopping, there is also a large amount of sharing of resources. These individuals actively open their bags before leaving and place on a donation table those canned food items they don’t want, can’t use, don’t currently need, so that others can use them. They also turn down categories of food items, such as produce or baked goods, if they can’t use them – so that others can have them later in line.

My volunteer group often goes over to Shirlington for lunch after our AFAC shift ends. I always marvel at my experience of traveling from the AFAC side of Four Mile Run to the Shirlington side. The dichotomy is striking. On the AFAC side, there’s a strong sense of caring and community which includes everyone who comes to the AFAC warehouse – clients, volunteers and staff. On the Shirlington side, there’s a different kind of community, exclusive to those fortunate enough to afford theater productions, movies, and eating out in tony restaurants.

I’m fortunate to be able to move with ease between these two communities! But even more so, I’m so glad to be able to volunteer with AFAC, because this brings me close to many wonderful people – many of whom just happen to be in a different situation than I am for the present.
